Youth in Fishing

I can only wonder whether this boy’s parents knew he was going to sea. Many small-scale fishers begin fishing from a very early age, some younger than this 10-year-old boy. Combined with the many ways in which the Apartheid government prevented indigenous children from attaining further education, many fishers left school and dedicated their futures to a life at sea. Some, whom today are without the ability to read or write their name, are dedicated, knowledgeable, and determined skippers with upwards of five decades in the industry.
